Look to the future

WHAT a pity that Labour supporters Alan Butcher and Stan Nattrass et al (Gazette letters, July and August) seem to have forgotten that they actually lost the election.

Whatever future grand plans Labour had, the voters had lost confidence in their government.

Any co-operation with Labour by the Lib-Dems would have required support by an odd mixture of other parties, some desirable, others not so.

Had Nick Clegg followed that route, within a very short time another very expensive election would have had to be held, with maybe even a similar result or, even worse, a very right wing Tory government.

As it is, the Lib-Dems, under Nick Clegg, a man of wide experience in international affairs, have, it seems, followed the wishes of the majority and as a result, we now have a centre-ist, more stable government which I believe most people wanted. Hopefully, it will be for a five-year term.

The financial circumstances in which we find ourselves are appalling, but show what happens when extreme capitalist principles are allowed, as in the USA, or when Labour, under both Prime Ministers, allowed unlimited credit, with tacit support of the City, giving it a completely free hand.

Everyone knew that whichever government came to power, the country was in for a very difficult period. It is very easy to be critical in opposition!

Surely the time has come for people of all parties, particularly party politicians, to stop carping and, instead of looking back, accept that things have changed, look to the future and see what positive contributions can be made to improve the current situation.

After all, democracy is a very sophisticated concept and requires all members to behave in a reasonable and decent way.
