Lorryload of trouble

WOULD it matter if the articulated lorries and semi-trailers on the roads of Arun, and everywhere else in the UK, were 6ft longer than they are now?

The government is seeking views on permitting an overall length of about 60ft, which might lead to an overall reduction in the number of such vehicles on our roads (see www.info4local.gov.uk/documents/consultations/1876812).

Some years back an increase in the size of HGVs came as a shock, so perhaps it is felt this consultation process will soften the perception of further change, though doing nothing to reduce the physical impact?

Perhaps it matters because in Arun we have a lot of artics operating over a deficient road network and have yet to provide for more homes and more jobs, lots more.

Whichever way planners turn to meet this responsibility they encounter the road network deficit, obvious to locals but ignored by governments with responsibility for the spine road, the A27.

Witness north Littlehampton, where traffic is set to become worse in and around Wick, Toddington and Lyminster following large scale development without the construction of a bypass around the latter.

Circumstances are much the same at Ford and north of Bognor.

Consultation may not be intended for the compliant taxpayer, but one can always let councillors know what you think of the proposal – if it matters!
