Lunch club organiser retires after 23 years ‘unstinting service’

Her real care for everyone who came to lunch club has brought her many friends and she has been better than many a Chancellor of the Exchequer; she has always balanced the books perfectly.

Betty said: “After I retired I began to run the lunch club and I have enjoyed every minute of it from shopping for flowers for the tables, and for food of course, but one of the best parts was designing table decorations.

“This was especially fun when we had celebratory meals like the Queen’s Jubilee last year and of course this year we had the royal baby’s birth to celebrate.

“Every year Christmas and Valentine’s Day were celebrated and many other occasions gave us extra reasons to enjoy ourselves,” she added. “Lunch club has kept me active and cheerful and I think this sort of voluntary work is the best way of keeping well and happy.

“I know that all the other volunteers who help at Lunch Club feel the same as I do.”

Gwen Parr, Chairman of Pulborough & District Community Care Association, paid tribute to Betty’s unstinting service. She said she would be much missed, in many ways, but most of all for her real concerns for all the people she met at Lunch Club. Such care as Betty’s is a priceless contribution to community life.

Pulborough & District Community Care Association needs volunteers for many interesting and enjoyable types of voluntary work from home visiting for the housebound to helping to organise social activities such as theatre trips and holidays.
