Mess has been left to rot

I am totally flabbergasted that Mr Dave W (in his letter to the Observer) did not appear to have understood the obvious premise of my own previous letter.

I thank him for his praise but he has certainly got the wrong end of the stick.

I was not complaining about the proposed Wetherspoon pub per se.

If they are coming, and that is not certain yet, I wish they would hurry up and get the job done.

The ‘blight’ I spoke of was about the ugly mess that Wetherspoon’s have left to rot for so long.

It is beginning to be another problem like the Granville Hotel site in Sea Road; a blot on the landscape for many years.

What is the Town Centre Strategy Team doing about problems like these?

Their meetings go on for years too but there is still an electricity junction box held together with sticky tape outside the library.

So much for the vaunted “Spirit of Place” from 2001.

What is needed is a bit of good housekeeping, such as slapping 109 orders on owners of buildings like Wetherspoon’s to keep them well tended.

At the moment careful owners of businesses like Sue and Alfredo at the Garden Café, a happy little oasis in the centre of town, have their customers’ view ruined by the tattered and tatty edifice opposite them.

I would offer a little advice, if I may, to Mr Dave W; don’t get your information from big business or the council publicity machine.

You will only get half the story. If we ‘complainers’ had listened to them, for instance John Shaw of Sea Space, 
there would now be several eight storey office blocks along the promenade. By ‘complaining’ Bexhill’s tough and astute residents called a halt to that.
