Millennium Wall update

I am happy to provide an update on the status of the Spirit of Rye Millennium wall (Letters, 8 February).

The landowner, Southern Gas Networks has offered to remove the graffiti and weed growth on the top of the wall, before transferring ownership of it to the Town Council. The Town Council has, in turn, requested that SGN also caps the top to inhibit further growth. Once this had been formally agreed the transfer will be arranged.

The Town Council appreciates Mr Crafer’s offer to undertake work on the wall and once ownership has transferred the Council will address its future maintenance.

A council’s activities are governed by the resources it has available. Rye Borough Council would have received Council Tax revenue that now goes to Rother District Council, as well as rental income from a large social housing stock.

Information on the Town Council’s activities may be obtained by reading its Annual Report (distributed to every household), news reports in ‘Fixtures’ or the Minutes of meetings on the Council’s web site (www.ryetowncouncil.gov.uk). Another option is to attend the Annual Town Meeting, which this year takes place at the School Creative Centre, New Road on 13 March, 6.30pm (registration) when the Mayor will give a summary of the Council’s work.

Richard Farhall, Rye Town Clerk.
