More should be done for victims

The item in Bexhill Observer (June 6) urging people not to suffer in silence about domestic abuse must be so reassuring to victims of this crime.

Almost weekly we read on the Hastings Magistrates’ Court page that cases of domestic violence or ‘assaulting a woman by beating’ are punished by a derisory fine or the ever present community order.

When the courts start to take this problem seriously then perhaps we will see a fall in cases which often, owing to lack of accountability, escalate to something more serious.
