For this prestigious award, equivalent to coming in the top few percentiles in a maths or science Olympiad, Henner’s entry in answer to ‘Does the history of ancient empires help us to understand modern imperialism?’ was an idiosyncratic look at the differences between empires and imperialism, thus looking at ancient Rome and Greece, as well as modern France and Britain.

The fact that Henner was writing in his second language, makes this a truly excellent and deserving win.

Participants were invited to a day at St John’s not only to collect their awards but also to participate in mini seminars organised by the College.

Henner said: “The prize giving went well and I enjoyed the mini-seminars by college tutors as well as a tour around St John’s.”

Mini-seminars offered by the college included Archaeology, Philosophy and History.

The national Classics and Ancient History Essay Competition is open to all students currently studying in Year 12 throughout the UK.
