National Service

MAY I remind readers that, as regards the 1948 Olympics, many young men between the ages of 18 and 20 did not have much choice to see the Games, as they would have been serving in HS forces doing the obligatory National Service, with many stationed abroad.

After training, my time in the RAF was spent in Germany, from March, 1948 to July, 1949. During this time, I did have some leave to come home, but have no idea if it coincided with the Olympics.

Many other servicemen were less fortunate and spent time in Kenya or the Far East.
