Need to rejoice in our diversity

Actively campaigning during the last few months for our great country to Remain in the EU I am now, as you can appreciate, deeply concerned for our future.

Through your columns I would like to express the campaign team’s thanks to all those who voted in favour of remaining in Europe.

To those who voted to leave, I hope that our fears are proved wrong. Although we are already witnessing the immediate effect of the pound dropping to its lowest value since 1985, Britain’s credit rating potentially hitting the buffers – which would affect not just our government’s ability to borrow but the ability of companies to access funds. We have already seen international companies starting to implement plans made for just such a leave decision; staff are being relocated out of London. Those of us taking holiday in Europe will discover they will be more expensive.

However, I sincerely hope and trust that the personal abuse heaped on me when wearing my ‘in’ T-shirt will cease being part of our political discourse. In my 50 years of campaigning I have never experienced such vitriol – this is not the way to behave in a democracy where people give up their time, as volunteers, in order sure that the electorate can make informed choices.

Well, the majority chose leave but I along, with 48 per cent of those who voted, namely 16.1 million people, will continue to fight for an open, optimistic, diverse and tolerant Britain.

Never before, in peace time, has there been a greater need for us to pull together, value, applaud and rejoice in our diversity and travel forwards with our neighbours, wherever they happen to have been born.
