Neighbours at risk

I AM writing to offer my opinion on the recent dramatic events at Ford Prison.

I believe that what happened was a sign of how lenient our prison system has become, because although punishment is the primary reason for imprisonment, the sentences handed out do not seem to have had the desired effect, as was displayed by the fact that those involved were seemingly unconcerned by the consequences of their actions.

Security at the prison has been called into question, with the lax conditions contributing to the ease with which offenders managed to smuggle alcohol, drugs and tobacco into the prison.

These factors undoubtedly contributed to the disturbance and the question must be raised as to how it was so easy for prisoners to get hold of these illegal items.

This behaviour has obviously brought concern to the local population, who may feel uneasy about potential risks posed, and it is high time something was done about it.
