Never glorified war

IN reply to David Barry's letter (Observer, November 19) I would like to say, on behalf of the Bexhill branch of the Royal British Legion, that we have no problem with David's right to wear his white poppy around Remembrance time, because it has only been with the great sacrifice of so many of our brave servicemen and women past and present, who have given us the freedom we enjoy today and which allows us to choose what colour poppy we wish to wear.

In addition, during the 15 years that I have been a member of the Legion, I have never heard that we have refused to condemn war. In fact, we have never glorified wars in any way, but have dedicated our effort in providing a first-class care and welfare service and to remembering those who gave so much so that we can live in today’s free society.
