New culturewill take time

I AM beginning to get a bit fed up with people constantly whingeing about Bexhill High School.

The time for whingeing has well and truly gone.

The facts are:

1) East Sussex County Council chose to spend £38 million on one school building;

2) The Governors chose to change both the school day and the complete learning structure;

3) The majority of parents have no alternative other than to send their children there.

Your correspondent Mr Walker, having watched 10 minutes of television, has decided that he is in a position to pass judgement (Letters, March 18).

Well Mr Walker, please don’t! People have worked far too hard to be dismissed so easily.

The BBC provided the independent expert who agreed that things were on track.

They filmed for three days and other than showing - shock horror - yawning children, didn’t seem to find too much wrong.

This whole new culture will take time to settle.

It’s not fair to expect anything else. It will take perhaps five years to fully see how things have worked.

I put my hands up to being one of the most vocal in my objections to the change.

However, having worked with the school’s senior management and having spent a lot of time there and observed what’s going on, I can tell you that I think it’s on the right path.

I might never get used to the idea that my child doesn’t have much family time. I might not like that the exam results have been poor.

But all we can do now is wait and see.

If Mr Walker is really interested in the school then I’m sure the principal, Mike Conn, would be happy to show him around.

But then perhaps he’s a man that judges a book by its cover?

What the school needs now is support and patience, and yes, some good will.
