New trophy awarded in school’s combined cadet force

Christ’s Hospital’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF) awarded a new trophy this year designed to encourage and reward leadership amongst younger students.

The Elstob Leadership Prize was presented for the first time by the Head Master to Cadet Corporal Seb Baker-Graves of the Royal Air Force section.

The new prize is a silver model of a Christ’s Hospital army cadet and is awarded to the member of the GE (Year 11) who most exhibits the potential to lead others.

The award is named in memory of Lieutenant Colonel Wilfrith Elstob VC DSO MC, a former pupil of Christ’s Hospital who won a posthumous Victoria Cross at the age of 29 commanding the 16th Battalion of the Manchester Regiment.

Lieutenant Alistair Goddard, CCF Adjutant, commented: “The new prize offers a valuable means of recognising excellence amongst the cadet force’s junior leaders, as well as a way of commemorating the extraordinary bravery and sacrifice of one of the School’s most prominent former pupils”.

The Victoria Cross is the highest military decoration for valour and has been awarded to just three Old Blues (former Christ’s Hospital pupils).
