I don’t know if it is the constant ebb and flow of the tides in Newhaven or the comings and goings of the ferries, perhaps it’s the circulatory motion of traffic around the town’s one-way system.

Whatever it is, there is definitely some sort of invisible oscillatory force being exerted on local councillors in the town.

I’d like to say I was surprised when I picked up the Sussex Express (July 10) and read that local councillor Steve Saunders has had a change of heart and has left the Co-operative Alliance on Lewes District Council.

No surprise at all, Steve is an oscillator.

Councillor Saunders says he isn’t happy with ‘political motives’ amongst some politicians at the council – that’s akin to saying you’re unhappy with baking motives amongst bakers or re-heeling motives amongst cobblers.

Talking of cobblers, this isn’t the first time Steve Saunders has found reason to find a new political home, in 2018 he left the Lib Dems to become an Independent.

I think ‘political motives’ may translate to ‘no one is taking any notice of me’. Know how you feel Steve.

Which brings me on to Cllr Sean Macleod.

Yet another councillor based in this parish with the itchiest feet.

He left the Green Party in March 2020 to become an Independent because he was unhappy at the council tax going up 9p a week.

But has now signed up with the Lib Dems, who are part of the Co-operative Alliance that put the council tax up.

If Cllr Macleod wasn’t happy with 9p, he’ll be hopping mad in March 2021.

As a result of Covid-19 the council has a deficit in their budget the size of a Transmanche ferry.

Taxi for Macleod!
