No excuse for bench delay

WE may have suffered a harsh winter, but the delay in completing the bench along The Promenade cannot be blamed on that alone.

During May there was hardly any progress, so much so that I thought that maybe the project had been scrapped.

Somebody has even written on one of the signs that the opening will not be 2010 but 2012.

This bench was supposed to be an opportunity for the town, instead we have missed the chance to say Longest Day; Longest Bench at its opening.

Last weekend saw Armed Forces Day with a host of attractions and the concession from the bench workforce was that they would not block off even more of the prom than they had done.

This weekend sees the Nautical Training Corps hold its Founders Day celebration for the second year, another missed opportunity to have the opening ceremony coupled with an influx of visitors to our town.

Anita Roddick did not get to create an organisation like The Body Shop by suffering fools gladly.

This bench was supposed to be a commemoration to her name and achievements.

What a pity the original opening date could not be achieved. Planning is what makes projects succeed, coupled with a flexibility to allow for adversities such as the weather.

Will whoever is responsible for this project get a grip and show some pride in their work and get it finished!

If the next bank holiday is missed as the opening date, then the one after that is Christmas!
