Not on the level

The recent series of public exhibitions concerning the Lyminster bypass provided some answers to our queries, but others were met with the statement: “Nothing has been decided yet.”

Apart from our surprise that some important facts seem to be missing at such a late stage in the design/consultation process, one wonders whether the official reply was intended merely to allay suspicions that, in fact, the requested information was already in existence!

There were some discrepancies between different officials’ versions, although most of West Sussex County Council’s representatives did seem to have been adequately briefed about their subject.

I was unable to get some really authoritative answers to my persistent queries about the exact fate of Toddington Lane level-crossing, and if the present facility to drive along Toddington Lane (north) directly into Mill Lane will remain.

If the proposed closure of our level-crossings is to satisfy the demand of Network Rail, it would be interesting to learn the extent of any financial advantage to that authority, and whether it really justifies the withdrawal of public rights-of-way that have existed for hundreds of years.

The future of our local bus routes does not seem to have been seriously considered, and neither has the convenience of residents both sides of the railway been taken into account!

How much noise – and vehicle fumes – will affect people living in the proposed new houses along the bypass as well as the present occupants of properties such as Toddington Park, Holly Drive and Highdown Drive?

Is it considered good town planning to drive a busy bypass through the middle of a brand-new housing estate?

The internal road junctions would surely result in conflict between various users!
