To some degree, people should be careful what they wish for.

We lived in a small market town in Northumberland where we also had to pay for parking but only 50p/hr.

People complained that we had to pay for parking while other towns did not. We could purchase an Annual Parking Disc for £74. Then before the next change, there was a Shoppers Disc for £14, which was great.

Then the council made parking free, but shoppers and tourists found it very difficult for anywhere to park because most spaces were filled with town workers.

Then they made the spaces with time limits; short stay 2hrs, long stay 4hrs but on street parking only 30mins, but one had to display a parking clock. All areas were covered by traffic wardens. This was better.

In Battle, there are no wardens, so until wardens are employed, nothing will work.
