Now is not the time for negativity

I am concerned at the negativity expressed and the words 'I shall work for the long term greater good of our community and our country' attributed to Sir Peter Bottomley following the Brexit result.

This seems a less than ringing endorsement of the wishes expressed in the referendum and I trust that Sir Peter is not proposing to join those who wish to frustrate the result. The majority believe that the greater good is served by leaving the EU and working to achieve the maximum benefits of an independent UK for our children and grandchildren.

Whereas after a general election an elected MP may have considerable latitude in dealing with certain matters, the referendum was on a single issue which leaves no room for individual interpretation of the result.

Despite his disappoint-ment, as the local MP, I should expect to hear a straightforward endorsement of the result and an undertaking from Sir Peter to respect it and to use his best endeavours to support the negotiations to exit the EU.

I trust this will be forthcoming.
