On two items...

TWO items in the Gazette (July 5) demonstrate how far detached from reality are the councillors and council officers who are supposed to be working as public servants for the benefit of Littlehampton residents.

West Sussex County Council has employed a firm of consultants, Mott MacDonald, to undertake a public consultation with residents, in a review of on-street parking in Littlehampton. I assume this is costing local council tax payers some several thousands of pounds.

I don’t recall this being raised by Littlehampton residents as an issue of urgency, nor was it anything any of our councillors proposed in their election campaigns.

And it does seem a pretty pointless exercise, given the fact the current parking restrictions are largely un-enforced anyway, especially to the front of Arun District Council offices, where a local van and car hire company seems to have carte blanche authority to ignore the limited waiting restrictions.

The second item is the decision of Littlehampton Town Council Conservatives to vote to cut £5,000 in funding from Littlehampton Town Show. The show has been a great success over the last 10 years, certainly more of a success than the almost longest bench in Britain, and the sum of £5,000, when measured against the pointless parking survey, illustrates the foolishness of the decision.

I know the Conservatives will try to defend the cut under the “all in it together” mantra, but as the majority of the town councillors are also district councillors, each receiving £5,000 plus per annum in tax-free expenses, that argument holds no value.
