Only one purse

Arun District Council, in its response last week in the story about the Town Hall parking spaces (Gazette, August 22), continue to talk about ownership.

I take the, perhaps simplistic, view that there is only one public purse.

The decision as to which public body is best suited to ‘own’ a particular public asset is then surely a matter of efficiency, i.e. least cost to the taxpayer.

If an asset performs a public task, and clearly our car parking spaces do, in supporting all the activities at the Town Hall, then the asset should remain in public ownership.

I know many residents of Arundel are dismayed that two related public authorities have not been able to resolve this simple issue without great expense to the taxpayers of Arundel and Arun.
