Our memories are not so short

Maggie Ferncombe, regional secretary of UNISON South East and another left wing activist, would have us believe that the issue with austerity is the sole fault of the conservatives and is designed to keep a class divide (Observer, June 19).

She deludes herself if she thinks that our memories are so short that we will forget that it was the disastrous policies of the last Labour government, supported by the unions, that led to such severe action being taken to get the country back on track.

I have no party loyalties and am as affected by the cuts being made as everyone else, but realise that we must learn to live within our means and accept some sacrifices to recover from Labours mismanagement.

The facts are really quite simple, if you keep borrowing and spending and borrowing more you will soon be bankrupt.
