Sometimes it seems as if one small piece of news points to an insight about our wider predicament.

Such a moment occurred to me when I read of the inability this year to restock the Carpet Gardens flower beds by the pier - and of course outside the now-closed Burlington Hotel (Eastbourne Herald May 29).

Perhaps the stretch of flower beds now stands as a sign to us all that what we assumed made Eastbourne so attractive in past years is now no longer sustainable, and so may now represent an opportunity for the whole community of this town, with its structures of business, local and central government, diversity of culture and commitment to a healthy environment for all, etc. to work together to imagine a new “reconfiguring” for Eastbourne to flourish in the years to come.

This opportunity seldom comes more than once within a lifetime.
