Patience will be rewarded when block paving returns

I WRITE in response to the letter "When will block paving return?" (Gazette, December 31).

Please be assured that the repairs to the walkway are only temporary repairs carried out by the original developer of the site.

The developer is still awaiting quotes to carry out final repairs to address the latent defects to the walkway.

By allowing the original developer to carry out these temporary repairs

and investigate the measures needed to permanently address the problems, it has not cost the harbour users or local council tax payers any money, as would have been the case if the works were carried out by the harbour board.

I do appreciate that there was an inconvenience to users of the walkway while these temporary repairs were carried out, but safety is of paramount importance and we needed to give the developer the opportunity to rectify the problems.

By carrying out the investigatory trial holes when we did, we were able to ensure that the walkway was open for the Christmas period, avoiding people having to be diverted into Pier Road.

I anticipate the walkway only being closed again when the permanent repairs are carried out, which we hope will be in the near future.

On behalf of Littlehampton Harbour Board, I thank people for their understanding and patience.
