The AED (Automated External Defibrillator) will be used in the case of a cardiac arrest and around 40 staff will be trained in its use

Rushfields director Kathryn Hillman said: “With 300 people a day coming through our doors it is vital that we have the equipment and the knowledge to deal with a cardiac emergency.”

HART co-ordinator Dave Fletcher said: “The presence of a defibrillator gives staff some reassurance that they can deal with a cardiac emergency while waiting for a paramedic and responder to arrive. Everyone should have some basic training in resuscitation techniques.”

Emergency responders total 10 at present and there are 32 defibrillators in the Henfield area, 17 of them in public assess areas.

Volunteer responders on duty are called, when required, by the ambulance service when a 999 call is made.
