Project made urgent visit home to mum happen

I WOULD like to express my heartfelt thanks to the Expanding Communities Project and in particular to Iryna Smith, for her professional help enabling me to positively resolve a problem.

I have lived and worked in this country for more than 10 years. Two years ago I applied to the Home Office for UK residency.

I waited for one year and nine months for my passport to be returned, as I needed to visit my 75-year-old mum in Latvia, who was not well and who I haven't seen for 10 years.

I asked the project for help with this situation, which they did in a professional manner – helping to translate letters, approaching Nick Gibb MP and establishing dialogue with him.

I feel that the project's help is absolutely vital in dealing with issues and establishing contact with organisations and services. I certainly could not have resolved my query without their help.

In my opinion, the project is a show of progressive thinking on the part of its funders. It should go on and develop, as, apart from helping individuals to resolve their personal issues, it gives the migrant communities help in finding their feet in this country, improving their quality of life and becoming an integral part of the community.

I would also like to mention Edita Karnil and thank her for her help translating, and also the Council for Voluntary Service, for supporting the project.
