Pub issue is not clear cut

I was most interested to read your article re my application to convert 1 Ferry Road into a private dwelling.

However, there are certain facts which I feel need to be clarified.

Firstly Sylvia Garcia expressed a lot of opinion on the matter and is reported to be a Ferry Road resident. She is, however, married to my son David Franklin, who owns the Crown pub and lives in winchelsea with him.

My son lets the pub to the present landlady, who when she heard that I was going to seek residential permission approached me with a view of letting it to her son.

Cllr Michael Boyd comments that he knows of two people seeking this type of premises - why then do they not contact the agents Questus, whose board has been in the window since March? There is no premium for the lease, it is not full repairing and the rent is fair. I point this out in case anyone should suggest the terms are too onerous.

The fact remains that it is in a poor retail position, does not have a shop window and was originally once part of the pub.

The article seems to suggest that if residential use was approved and one person complained the pub would go, but were this so I don’t think there would be a pub left in the country, as show me one where there has never been one complaint about noise.

Dare I suggest there have been other complaints about noise from the pub and they feared this may tip the balance?

Regarding the points made about noise from the pub court yard, which adjoins my rear wall, the rear of my property has no windows but it has a flat roof and above this is the window of another flat, the tenants of which seem to cope with overlooking the courtyard.

Lastly, regarding parking, a resident might go out to work during the day, a commercial tenant will come in and chances are need to park - difference.

Sincerely C Franklin, Winchelsea.
