Pupils discover wild and wonderful animals

The children are learning all about animals in a variety of habitats and Mr Cornick talked with them about wildlife issues and pet care.

He brought with him owls, a hedgehog and rats which the children were able to handle - under close supervision naturally!

Reece from Year 1 said, “My favourite animal was the owl because it flew all around us.”

Vicky Dedman, Key Stage 1 leader commented, “It’s brilliant when the children can have first - hand experience of creatures and hopefully this learning will make them appreciate and care for our environment for future generations.”

Keeping with the “creatures” theme, children from Castlewood’s Reception class paid a visit to Ladyland Farm at Horley.

The pupils became farmers for the day, beginning with a bumpy ride on the tractor to look at the crops growing in the fields.

On their return to the farmyard, the “farmers” fed the sheep and calves and learned about the goats and pigs. Then they were able to hold some of the smaller animals and birds. Once chores were done it was time to play on the hay bales.

Maisie, aged 5, really enjoyed her day out and said, “The rabbits were the best part – they were so soft and cuddly!”

Georgina Allan, Reception teacher, commented, “This farm visit is invaluable to the children.

“It really puts their learning into context and helps them understand ideas we have talked about in the classroom”.
