Pupils visit corridors of power

Students from Christ’s Hospital recently had the opportunity to get an insider’s view of the corridors of power, when they visited Old Blues (former pupils of the School) working in Westminster and Whitehall.

CH Students from Year 12 received tours of Parliament plus the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), as well as having the opportunity to watch the belligerent debate of Prime Minister’s Question Time from the public gallery.

The tours included the chance to see many areas not normally open to the public, including the Foreign Secretary’s private office, the Locarno Suite and Durban Court.

The students were also given a demonstration of cryptography on a surviving enigma machine on display in the Ambassador’s Waiting Room at the Foreign Office.

The students were the guests of former Christ’s Hospital pupils Theo Usherwood, the Press Association’s Parliamentary Editor, and Charles Morgan, Private Secretary to the Foreign Secretary.

Both provided fascinating Q&A sessions about their professional lives in political journalism and the Diplomatic Service.

“It was terrific to be able to get such a personal behind the scenes view of government and the media. The pupils were really inspired by the setting and the enthusiasm of Theo and Charlie for their very different kinds of work. I am extremely grateful to both for being so generous with their time”, commented Dr Alistair Goddard, Christ’s Hospital teacher who accompanied the trip.
