Pupils’ work displayed in Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s released a number of awards which schools could choose to participate in as part of their Active Kids initiative.

I chose to plan the two awards which were aimed at the age of my class (Year 2, 6-7 year olds); Eatwell Chef Award and 5 A Day Chef Award, into our topic for that term, Down on the Farm.

Once the children had completed all the elements of both awards they were presented with their certificates by Jane Etheridge, PR at Sainsbury’s, Horsham.

Jane and the store manager, Derek, were very keen to promote our work and created a display behind the checkouts in the Horsham store.

They have also hung bunting made out of the photos of the children’s work above the fruit and vegetable aisles.

Once the work was on display in store Jane invited my class, my Teaching Assistant, Mrs Huisman, and myself back to see it and take the children’s photograph with their work and Derek the store manager. Sainsbury’s were even kind enough to give each child an apple as we left, which we later enjoyed back at school.

An in-school display of the children’s work details what they did for the topic and reads as follows:

Year 2 have been exploring the work of artist, Giuseppe Arcimboldo. His work linked really nicely with our Topic, Down on the Farm, as we have been looking at the different fruits and vegetables that can grow on farms and our Science work, A Balanced Diet, as he paints very unusual portraits using a range of objects, including fruit and vegetables!

We started by looking at Arcimboldo’s work. We found it very interesting. He was a very clever artist and had a great sense of humour! Next we made a shopping list of the fruit and vegetables we wanted to use to make our own faces from. Miss Fandrejewski asked us to be as creative as possible.

During our next lesson we made our fruit and vegetable faces and took a photograph of our work on the iPad. Mrs Huisman printed these off for us and the following lesson we sketched the outline of our face from the photograph using the sketching techniques we had learnt in the first half of the term.

Over the next few lessons we added different techniques to our faces. First we added colour by blending with pastels. Then we added pattern thinking about how to fill the space in an interesting way. Finally, we added texture through collage.

In DT we designed and made our very own healthy pizzas! We created a class shopping list and went to Sainsbury’s to buy all our ingredients. We even helped pack our items at the checkout. When we got back to the classroom we made our pizzas from scratch, including the base which we all weighed out ourselves. They were yummy!
