Nonetheless, it is disappointing that the provision of the long-overdue pedestrian/cycle path over the railway at Mill Lane, Rustington, that would safely terminate the strategic Worthing to Rustington cycle path, is not included.

After I revived this suggestion (Gazette, April 19, 2012), it was keenly supported by the highways and transport group of the Joint Eastern Arun Area Committee, which I was subsequently able to report (Gazette, October 4, 2012) had agreed to obtain a ballpark estimate.

Further progress was made when the group’s chairman, county councillor Dr James Walsh, advised the joint committee on June 20 this year that its provision had been agreed for future infrastructure plan priority.

May I suggest that, in view of the county council’s windfall, it would now be appropriate for Rustington’s county councillor, Graham Tyler, as chairman of the joint committee, together with Dr Walsh, to expedite progress by asking their colleagues to include the proposal in the current programme of works?

This would be of particular importance, given the increase in traffic that will arise from the redeveloped Sainsbury’s superstore, and the overwhelming need to protect the safety of pupils of The Angmering School, which justify special urgency.
