Quality housing

The correspondence about the contentious issues between developers and the local planning authorities indicates aggression by developers whose livelihoods depend upon frequent building projects, and the timidity of local planning staff in controlling development.

The matter of building on farmland or recreational sites seems to me to be irrelevant, as Rustington appears to have encroached on large swathes of such land years ago.

To me, it is of more concern for the planning authorities to concentrate on the quality, rather than the quantity, of future housing, as such is the importance of profits to developers, that (as reported in the Daily Mail some time ago) rooms have been downsized by about a third, and observation of recent local developments shows intensive crowding on tiny plots of land when compared to the sites of the pleasant bungalows, and wide grass-verged roads in the Zachary Merton area of Rustington.

Taking note of effective modern trends in plumbing and heating systems, the installation of water tanks in lofts and providing airing cupboards are no longer necessary, thus leading to further economies in building materials and costs, to the benefit of developers.

It is these matters which I regard as important to quality of housing for the occupants, unless the planners are content to see greater concentration of housing of the Coronation Street type in this desirable area of West Sussex.
