Ready to help food crisis OAPs

We were deeply concerned to hear about the rise in numbers of older people using Littlehampton’s food bank in Fitzalan Road (Gazette, March 26).

It was particularly distressing to hear additional evidence that many older people are in financial crisis as a result of the changes to the pension application process.

At Age UK West Sussex, we not only provide a Freephone information and advice service (0800 019 1310), which is manned daily from 10am-2pm and can help with pensions, benefit checks; other avenues to maximise income and more, but we also run the Tamarisk Centre in Littlehampton’s Beach Road. The centre is open from 9.30am-4.30pm (4pm on a Friday) and is a social hub which offers older people home-cooked hot meals and snacks to eat in or take away at highly subsidised rates, in addition to an evolving programme of activities.

We hope the older residents of Littlehampton will feel able to use our services, alongside the vital emergency provision from the food bank, as support during financial difficulty and beyond.
