Respect for law has deteriorated

A recent Bexhill Observer (3/3/17) has an excellent article on the seemingly rising assaults on police officers.
The sad thing is assaults in general and crimes as a whole are rising in the UK because there is no deterrent.

Hide AdForty years ago or more if you dared to assault a police officer (very doubtful) you would get the “twig” – the police truncheon across your knees or worse.
Before that police often carried as well a rolled rubberised heavy cape, that made a very efficient deterrent with a clout over the head if you misbehaved.
I can well remember many years ago when working with youth clubs in the south London area that sometimes had some fairly rowdy characters, one of the bigger lads took a swing at a constable, was arrested and later released with the plainly visible effects of “falling down the steps to the cells” was how it was put.
Now, although the police do a great job with the huge financial restrictions that they have now with massive cutbacks, they are not helped by the namby pamby courts handing out totally inappropriate short or none existent sentences that lately have become de rigeur and deter nobody.

Hide AdThus respect for the law across the board has deteriorated beyond the comprehension of those in years gone by when you respected the police.
Until the courts and those who advise on sentencing get the wool from over their eyes, the UK will become even more dangerous for everyone.
