Reversing carsconstant hazard

I, TOO, would support Roberto Bini's thoughtful and inclusive comments (Observer letters, March 25) concerning promenade users.

Maybe one reason why cyclists choose to cycle on the promenade is that De La Warr Parade tries to accommodate more than 300 parked cars on warm days: this free facility is of course a wonderful enticement for visitors to visit our wonderful town.

However, I notice that all of the parked cars repeatedly face the sea.

This is understandable as people may well want to look at the sea, but it presents cyclists with a quarter-mile hazard whereby they have to constantly try to avoid reversing cars pulling out onto the main carriageway.

Perhaps thought might be given to signage instructing car drivers to reverse into the allocated parking spaces.

Such an intitiatve might allow for cyclists to keep to the highway with a greater sense of safety.

My eldest son, who cycles professionally in Belgium, tells me that local communities do much to support safer cycling by closing roads for cycle racing events - his website is: joshcunninghamcycling.com
