Sad loss of shelter

I AM saddened to see that the Arun District Council is happy to get rid of yet another well-used seafront shelter, giving it to a private consortium to convert into a kite surfing centre, thus leaving residents and visitors alike with no provision for seating or shelter in the vicinity of the Littlehampton Swimming and Sports Centre.

If demolished, there will no longer be any proper shelters between Littlehampton Promenade, by the river mouth, and the junction of Sea Lane in Rustington.

You cannot describe the covering over the long bench as a shelter, as, in reality, it would not protect you from anything whatsoever.

On walking along the Prom at the weekend, I noted that the planning application notice for the shelter near the swimming centre has been destroyed. Therefore, nobody will be aware of its demise.

I am all for a kite surfing centre. I love to sit, in the soon to be knocked down shelter, and watch the surfers. But please, find somewhere else to put your centre – how about the plot to the right of the shelter, where the portable cabin was placed for the same use last year.

In closing, can I urge all Littlehampton and Rustington residents to send objections to the district council, referring to planning application number LU/173/10, by August 19.
