Saved from flood risk

MAY I make some corrections to councillor Ian Buckland's letter (Gazette, March 4), regarding our development of 47 River Road, Littlehampton?

The appeal was based solely on the Environment Agency's objection on flooding grounds. There were no objections from Arun District Council on any other planning matters such as height, parking, etc.

The inspector, having listened to all the submissions, decided that the proposal would not only save a building of "Special Interest" (Arun's listing), but, in his words, "repairs to the river wall would be a significant sustainability benefit to the wider community, that would need to be weighed against any flood risk". Mr Buckland, as a River ward councillor, should be delighted for the residents.

With his local knowledge, and possibly a degree in hydrology, he may have a better idea for saving the building and decreasing the risk of flooding to the community.

I wonder if he visited the Environment Agency exhibition showing plans to protect the properties in Littlehampton, involving raising the flood defences from the A259 to the coast, along the East Bank of the River Arun (Gazette news in brief, March 4)?
