Scarecrow thanks to Bonfire Boyes

As you know, Battle Town Council were happy to grant almost on the nod a sum of £100 to the town’s Medieval Fayre at the last full Council Meeting – an event which supports businesses around the town and brings visitors to our area. They also allocated a sum of up to £1,200 for a ‘Community Event’ at the end of July with just one councillor not supporting that motion.

Sadly, when an application for the sum of £75 was presented to the council for consideration, it ended with the Mayor, Cllr Richard Bye, using his casting vote against the motion having earlier supported the idea of helping towards printing costs for the Battle Scarecrow Festival during the debate! This is an event, mind, that also brings visitors into the town and hence supports our town centre and other interests local to Battle – and no monies were allowed to be granted.

Some residents have had a difficult time understanding the difference between the merits of the two applications relating to the festivals.

On Sunday at the Medieval Fayre, I was truly amazed and gratified to be approached by a member of the Battel Bonfire Boyes and told that they were going to donate £75 towards the cost of the Scarecrow Festival as they were so disappointed with the decision by the town’s councillors.

Can I use your paper to render my heart-felt thanks to them? Their generosity restores my faith in the local community that we are able to enjoy in Battle!
