School fete raises over £2,000 in two hours

On a perfect summer’s afternoon, the well-attended event raised £2,362 in just two hours.

Organised by Emma Wood and Natasha Challis, along with the Friends of Amberley School Association, there were traditional games and sideshows, pony-rides, a bouncy castle, a well-stocked plant stall, tombola, raffle, teas and a barbecue, all of which did a roaring trade.

Additionally, there was a steam engine and a pair of genuine vintage cars – a 1928 Austin Seven provided by Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre, and a 1930 Alfa Romeo owned by Mike Toynbee.

For the first time since the demise of the Amberley Revels some years ago, there was a small competition tent, with entries for various arts and craft classes, cakes, preserves and more.

These were judged by Amberley’s vicar, the Revd Alison Pattenden, head teacher Jon Gilbert and chair of the school governors Carolyn Shaw, who agreed the standard was exceptionally high, particularly in the children’s classes for which there were some highly imaginative entries.

Natasha Challis said: “What a fabulous afternoon! We could not make any of this happen without the immense work of other parents, who give up their time to help Emma and I make these events as successful as they are.

“We are also very lucky to have support from the School and the village.”

Carolyn Shaw added: “On behalf of the governors I would like to congratulate the Amberley School parents for organising such a marvellous village event.

“The sheer variety of stalls and activities made for a highly enjoyable afternoon and the parents’ hard work and attention to detail meant that everyone had fun.”

Head teacher, Jon Gilbert, expressed his gratitude to the Friends of Amberley School. “With the money raised, we will be able to purchase a range of resources and equipment which will benefit the learning of all the children at Amberley School.

Natasha and Emma also thanked all the local businesses for their support and helpers, in particular, Glenys Rowe, who organised a fully-laden plant stall, with contributions from many local gardens.
