School welcomes new head

The pupils, staff and governors at the First School extended a warm welcome to new Headteacher, Marion Smith last week.

Peter Surtees, Chair of Governors commented: “We are delighted to appoint Marion as our new Headteacher. She has the vision, values and passion to continue and build on all the positive initiatives of Garry Smart our previous Headteacher, who retired at Christmas.”

Marion added: “The school has wonderful facilities and wide range of creative learning opportunities, the children particularly enjoy using iPads to enhance their learning and we plan to continue investing in new technologies for their benefit. It’s also lovely to see the result of work carried out by pupils alongside artists in residence and we plan to build on that as well as continuing the strong ethos of developing staff to be the best they can be.”

The school is set in just under 2.5 acres of grounds and has a swimming pool, dedicated teaching kitchen, allotments for pupils and families as well as a large wildlife area and pond. Having recently been awarded Eco Schools Green Flag, the school will be continuing to develop outdoor learning as part of Forest Schools and recently forged links with Parham House to use part of their estate for this.

Comments Marion: “Storrington is a truly wonderful place. I have been impressed by the creativity and motivation of children and staff. I feel very proud to have been chosen to lead the school. You get a feeling when you walk into a school and Storrington felt a happy, safe and friendly place for pupils and staff – I am delighted to be here!”
