School’s sports scholars make great role models

Farlington School is very proud of its sports scholars. They work hard to gain this status and gain a number of benefits from being one.

The current scholars are drawn from Year 7 to the Lower Sixth and are involved in a wide variety of sports: diving, swimming, hockey, tennis, riding, basketball, triathlon, fencing and athletics. Many also hold other scholarships such as drama and academic scholarships or are good all-rounders within the school.

Each candidate is considered individually with the aim of nurturing and developing her skills. Her potential is considered, not just her achievements to date. To become a sports scholar, each candidate is evaluated by Farlington’s PE and Games staff in terms of her spatial awareness, stamina, agility, cardiovascular fitness, games understanding and competitive edge. Mental attitude to games and sport is as important as a portfolio of achievements.

All sports are considered, not just those taught at Farlington. Current scholars include a top 50 women’s epee fencer, junior members of the Sussex Hockey squad, a top endurance rider, county swimmers, a badminton champion and the number one under-17 pole vaulter.

Sara Whittaker, Director of PE and Games at Farlington, says, “Our aim is for each scholar to fulfil her potential. The scholars are offered a programme to enhance their chosen sport with dedicated trips and motivational speakers. These focus on a whole range of relevant areas: sports psychology, nutrition and teamwork.

“They also benefit from the strong links Farlington has with external sporting organisations such as Horsham Blue Stars and Atlantis Swimming Club. All the scholars contribute a great deal to the school and are excellent role models for the other students.”
