Shoppers would welcome opening

Whilst I have every sympathy and respect for the religious views held by the Jempson Family, I cannot see why these views should be inflicted upon the thousands of Rother residents who use the supermarket six days a week but are denied access on a Sunday.

A picture comes to mind of an elderly lady living in Rye, a borderline Alzheimer’s sufferer, who has forgotten to get bread.

She has no car, doesn’t get on with the neighbours and her family live in Australia.

It’s no help to say there are other supermarkets nearby as this doesn’t apply in her case and I suspect there are many others in similar situations.

Supermarkets by definition are a service industry to the general public which means they should cater to popular demand.

The extra hours needed would create employment for those who want it on Sundays and would be welcomed by customers who are unable to shop at other times,maybe because of family demands.

New laws are shortly coming into place regarding this, and unless prohibited by law I cannot see why Rye residents should have to suffer this inconvenience which has seemingly gone unchallenged for many years.
