Snake in grass?

Councillor Mike Northeast is to be commended for warning that the safety of shoppers visiting the Morrisons supermarket at Wick is jeopardised because the essential provision of a pedestrian crossing over the A259 might inconvenience ‘reptiles’ that may not even exist (Gazette, August 15).

I hope that county councillor Dr James Walsh, chairman of the highways and transport group of the Joint Eastern Arun Area Committee, will kindly explain how the bizarre situation apparently now exists, in county council highways policy, whereby consideration for reptiles takes precedence over the safety of our own species.
