Still searching for gypsy answers

ON August 3rd, the Observer published a letter in which I
raised ten questions, mainly concerning itinerant gypsies and the problem RDC has in finding sites for them.

In the following week’s letters
page was one from L Smith
headed ‘Answers to John’s gypsy questions’.

Although I replied to that letter it was not published, so I am trying again, because L Smith (a gypsy who has lived on land at the
Telham Lane/Powdermill Lane junction for some few years, and where her planning application is yet to be agreed) is not the sort of gypsy I was referring to, and she knows it, and thus her answers do not apply.

For the record, I was referring to those gypsies who arrive in this country (usually from Eire), and who, whilst demanding to live
their own particular life-style
(often very untidy), also demand to benefit from the standard of life this country has to offer, but without contributing to it.
