Students impress in photography contest

Each year the art department at Christ’s Hospital offers pupils the opportunity to enter its annual photographic competition named in memory of former pupil and renowned photographer Tony Ray-Jones.

‘Don’t take boring pictures’ was a self-imposed rule Tony Ray-Jones lived by throughout his all too short career. Documenting ordinary English life, his images were a startling departure from anything else being produced at the time.

This year’s Tony Ray-Jones Photography Competition had over 160 entries on the theme of ‘teenage’, inspired by the work of guest judge, Jon Savage.

Jon Savage is a writer, broadcaster and commentator on music and youth culture, his latest book published this year and entitled ”1966” looks at popular music and the cultural turmoil of 1966.

Christ’s Hospital was delighted to welcome Jon Savage to the art department.

He was very impressed with the quality of photographs and chose the winners because he particularly liked ‘their narrative in the images’:

Junior: Andrew McLeod

Intermediate: Angelle Roberts

Senior: Misha Citron

Best in Show: Adela Seeley
