The show attracted capacity entries and the standard of exhibits was particularly high this year. A large number of people visited the show on Saturday afternoon and many were new faces. Also, many of the exhibitors were first timers and the committee all agree that this is very encouraging.

54 individuals brought along over 380 entries and the Hall was filled with the scent of flowers and delicious newly baked cakes and savoury pies. It was also very exciting to see that 10 gentlemen were inspired to bake a Marmalade Cake, the standard, of which, was very high.

Marilyn Bew took the honours in the cookery, but it was a close thing – the Judges’ comments that her Coffee and Walnut cake was ‘out of this world’ finally swinging it.

Visitors studied the cabbages for what seemed ages before moving on to the courgettes, Gordon Cooper entered enough exhibits to take two Vegetable awards, whilst, David Tidy, the chairman, won the gongs in the Flower section.

The Floral Art entry ‘Oranges and Lemons’ positively radiated colour, with the prizes being split between Marion Neden and Val Court.

Jane Gregory triumphed in the handicrafts section, Tony Turner took the cup for the most prize money in the Photography.

The winner of the Banksian medal from the RHS this year was Marion Neden who won the most prize money in the ‘Horticultural section’, however the surprise winner of this year’s ‘Best in Show’ was 10 year old Master Archie Batten for his model of a ‘Hansel & Gretel House’ made out of fried sausages and toast! The youngest winner ever recorded in the society’s 83 years.

A huge thanks to everyone who helped and those who entered. Bring on next year!
