Theatrical photo shoot success for beautician

Jessica Bailey, who studies at Central Sussex Coollege, gained the award for her fierce Lion King inspired look.

The 19-year-old, along with other Hair and Media Make-up students at Central Sussex College, created some dazzling looks for their creative hairdressing skills projects, which were photographed by students on the College’s Higher National Certificate in Media course who were creating portfolios for their Photojournalism unit.

Although Media students from other courses have worked with the Hair and Beauty team before, this is the first time that students on the Higher National Certificate have undertaken a portrait photo-shoot with the Hair and Media Make-up students.

The trainee beauticians were set the task of creating looks inspired by theatre productions of their choice. Each look included hair, make up and costume design and took over three hours to create.

Other looks came from Georgina Barton, 18, from Crawley, who transformed her model into Fiona from the musical Shrek; Natasha Hanson, 20, from Crawley, created a flapper-girl look inspired by the Great Gatsby; Chloe Main, 18, from Crawley, found inspiration in West End musical We Will Rock You; Areepha Osman-Harper, 18, from Crawley, was inspired by musical Chicago and Lizzie Whitehead, 19, from East Grinstead, created a scarecrow look based on The Wizard of Oz.

The Hair and Beauty team awarded Lizzie Whitehead first prize for her stunning scarecrow look, second place went to Jessica Bailey and Areepha Osman-Harper’s burlesque look came in third place.

The winners were awarded prizes for creating such outstanding work.

Theatrical Hair Tutor Sasha Piper, commented on her students’ projects: “The students have dedicated seven weeks to complete their total looks, trying out different ideas and styles.

They came across some problems but overcame them through trial and error and they’ve all worked really hard. They’re now preparing for their final showcase on 11th June which will feature the use of bald–caps and prosthetics.”
