This is nonsense

I WAS surprised that the defection, for the second time, of a local councillor merited pride of place on the front page of last week's Observer (Friday, July 6) whereas the good news story of the week was relegated to page two.

The visit of Their Royal Highnesses The Earl and Countess of Wessex, was a lovely event for the hundreds who turned out to welcome them on a glorious day with the new seafront looking at its splendid best.

The Royal couple clearly enjoyed their visit and it was a delight to see hordes of toddlers playing in the fountains.

I ask Councillor Deirdre Williams why she did not stand as an Independent at the district elections a year ago. She says in the article that she had no choice but to resign from the Conservative Group, if she was to keep her integrity.

This is nonsense. The morally correct action, only one year into a four-year term, would have been to resign as a councillor and allow a by-election to take place.

This way, she could have campaigned under her new political banner and let her residents, who she says she is determined to serve loyally, the chance to decide whether to elect her or a Conservative, as they thought they had.

I should hold the front page each week just in case Mrs Williams has another epiphany and switches parties again: after all, there are plenty to choose from. Perhaps she might fancy UKIP or the Monster Raving Loony Party, the next time round?
