Time for council to fight for town

I would like to give a vote of thanks to Gale Goddard's letter '˜Thanks for protecting our town' in last week's Observer. Anne-Marie Loader and the people who have helped to give her strength to fight on to preserve the heritage of Gullivers for the benefit of us all, deserve the tribute given by Gale Goddard.

I am personally very sad to see the spokesperson for Rother District Council give a statement to say that they are ‘disappointed at the recent Appeal Court ruling challenging their decision’.

This sounds as if the decision was straightforward and does not reflect the huge interest this planning decision had on the community. As councillor for Sackville Ward for 16 years and a member of the planning committee during that time, I can tell you that it was one of the most controversial decisions ever made from the point of view of the residents.

Anne-Marie Loader and many of the residents put up a huge fight forming action groups attending planning meetings and court appearances in number.

One has to question as to why the developers have continued to pursue this development which is hardly going to be a cash cow for them. My concern is that there is a fairly new planning committee in place who will not be aware of the history, many will be country members who will have little interest in Bexhill.

Sorry to bang the drum again, but is this not a good reason to have a town council for Bexhill who could at least put forward their strong opposition to planning applications in the town? Rye and Battle are ferocious in their support for their towns.
