Time for more independents

I really hoped that the people of Bexhill had made their feelings clear in that they were unhappy with the lack of a voice for our town.

The petition with over 4,000 signatures for a governance review still sits with Rother District Council, who can delay until October and then a further year for the officers to actually start work on a possible outcome (town council or area committee) and then with such a heavy Conservative majority dismiss the whole idea altogether. The decision making body (the cabinet) should give a democratic voice to important decisions which affect the whole of Rother, however, with half of the residents of Rother living in Bexhill one would expect the balance of the cabinet to reflect this.

I note that Simon Elford is to be replaced by a country member leaving the total number of Bexhill councillors at four, carefully selected to support the leader Carl Maynard and the Conservative point of view.

We need to speak up and demand more democratic and transparent cabinet and scrutiny meetings, fewer rehearsed and united decisions already made at pre-meeting, stop cabinet members being selected because they will put up their hands when directed.

This letter leads me to enforcing my belief that we must have more independent councillors who can be true to themselves with no political allegiance to any political party.
