Time is right for embroidery

I was surprised, however, that there was no mention of displaying the Hastings Embroidery. The embroidery was the brain child of Group Captain Ralph Ward and consisted of 27 panels beautifully worked in embroidery and appliqué by the Royal School of Needlework to celebrate the 900th anniversary of the battle of Hastings in 1966.

Now many new-comers to the town are probably unaware of its existence because, apart from two panels which are on display in the Town Hall, the rest have been hidden away in storage for many years.

It seems sad that a permanent display area for the embroidery could not have been incorporated in the redesign of the pier.

It would be even sadder if the embroidery could not be on display in its entirety as part of the 2016 celebrations – I am sure it would be a fine tourist attraction.

It must have been a costly exercise when it was first commissioned in 1965 and those involved with its execution must be very disappointed that the results of their hard labour have been hidden away out of sight for so long.

Surely it is time to rectify this situation and 2016 gives us the perfect opportunity.
